On August 2 we hosted another joint NGO beach clean up effort between Plastic Free Seas and Hong Kong Shark Foundation 香港護鯊會and were blown away by the amount of plastic, microplastics, and general rubbish on the beach in Discovery Bay (especially take away plastic).
Over 20 volunteers pitched in and collected over 155 kg of rubbish plus we collected 68 plastic bottles for recycling of which interestingly :
11 from China

41 from Hong Kong

1 from Vietnam

9 unknown origin
6 were not recyclable
We also shockingly learned from PFS’s Dana Winograd that in Hong Kong we use 225 million NON-REUSABLE masks a MONTH!! Clearly we ALL need to make positive cognitive consumption changes (just like NOT eating shark fin soup) to do better and reduce and re-use before we even think about recycling. Say NO to shark fin soup! Say NO to single use plastics!
