Say YES to Shark Free Wedding and enjoy discounts from over 40 wedding vendors
In order to encourage more couples to go shark-free in weddings, Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF), together with the online wedding platform, Bride Union, have launched the ‘Shark-Free Wedding’ campaign since 28th July, 2020. Couples who promise to not consume shark fins will receive special wedding vendor discounts and offers. We believe that the cruel and inhumane method used to cut the fins should not be involved on the couple’s joyous and lovely big day. In fact, tasteless shark fins do not have any significant nutritional value and may even contain heavy metals. They are definitely not the necessities in a wedding.
Overwhelming responses from wedding vendors
Over 40 wedding vendors have become HKSF ‘Shark-Free Wedding Ambassador’. The categories of the participating wedding vendors include but are not limited to bridal make-up, photography, decoration, gown, jewellery, modern calligraphy. There are designer bridal shops such as HITCHED!Bridal, Tickled Pink Bridal Closet and highly popular studios or photographers, namely Studio Oak, Tammy Shun, Moonbird Production and 123Cheese Production as the Ambassadors. Attractive offers provided by the Ambassadors include discounts and cash rebates.
Quick and easy participation for couples
Couples can visit Bride Union website (https://brideunionhk.com/campaign-hksf) for the ‘Shark-Free Wedding Ambassador’ information and discounts and/or special offers provided. The easy steps of joining the ‘Shark-Free Wedding’ campaign are as follows:
- After visiting Bride Union website and signing the promise of having a shark-free wedding, a confirming page with participating code will be displayed;
- Take a screenshot of the confirming page with participating code and enjoy discounts and/or special offers from participating vendors.

Tickled Pink Bridal Closet (left), To Be Wed (middle) and HITCHED! Bridal (right) provide famous designer brands from Israel, New York and Italy. Local wedding gown brands such as Canak Bridal Studio and Infini Love Bridal also participate in the campaign.
There are different styles in the works from Studio Oak (left), Tammy Shun (middle), Moonbird Production (right) and other participating photographers. Couples can match with photographers that suit their own styles.
Jewellery brands, Bowrington Concept Jewelry (left) and Beyond Diamond (right) offer 10% off for the wedding collection and 20% off for all products respectively, encouraging couples to have shark-free wedding banquets.
Stop cruel murder by supporting the shark-free wedding
Every year, over 100 million sharks are caught worldwide for shark fins and other products, with over 50% of the world’s shark fin being traded through Hong Kong alone. Many people consider shark-finning to be cruel and inhumane because the animal is usually still alive when its body is thrown back into the sea. Unable to swim, and therefore to breathe, the shark will generally suffocate to death slowly. Marine ecosystems are as delicate and complex as any other on our planet and we cannot predict the precise effects that eliminating sharks would have.
According to the WWF, in 2018, 49,331 weddings in Hong Kong with an average of 17 tables per wedding were held. There were potentially 204 bowls of shark fin soup per event. For each wedding that goes shark-free, 24 sharks can be saved. By holding the ‘Shark-Free Wedding’ campaign, HKSF, together with Bride Union hope to encourage more couples to get rid of the old tradition of consuming shark fin soups in banquet and take action of conserving our precious animals for a truly warm, refined wedding.
