1. Can you introduce yourself briefly to us? Why protecting shark is an important issue? –
I am a nurse. At the same time, I am one of the members of a handicraft brand, Buddies Accessories. I created this handicraft brand with my friends, who like making hand-made accessories, in May, 2012.
All along, my friends and I are concerned about issue of human over-exploiting and killing of animals. We pay attention to reports and international news regarding this issue. Protecting sharks is thereby an important issue to us. And we wish to encourage more and more people to pay attention to sharks protection.
2. How do you spread the words to others in protecting sharks, such as friends, family or public?
I spread the message to people around me through various means.
The establishment of Buddies Accessories is actually aims at supporting work of charities. We wish to help abandoned animals and the needy of our society. We donated all of the income generated from Buddies Accessories to charities. And we decided to support Hong Kong Shark Foundation through donation.
Apart from that, we encourage people around us to concern about shark protection. We encourage our friends, especially those who are going to marry, to drop shark fins from their menus of the wedding banquets. Luckily, many of our friends show their support by not choosing shark fin as banquet dishes.
By encourage more and more people not to eat shark fin, we hope to reduce the demand to shark fin so that there will be less supply in the market.
Still, I want to take more actions. Therefore, I decided to dress in shark in this year Standard Chartered
Marathon. This year is actually my fifth year of joining the 42km race of Standard Chartered
Marathon. I wish to spread the message of shark protection to my friends and people in this society to pay attention to shark protection.
3. What makes you decide to stand up for protecting sharks?
All along, I keep paying attention to news and reports about human over-exploiting animals. What terrified me most is the process of human killing animals for furs and killing sharks for shark fins. It is really cruel! And recently, I have visited the exhibitions held by Hong Kong Shark Foundation in JCCAC. The content and pictures showed in the exhibitions really inspire me to do something more to protect sharks.
4. Have you encountered any difficulties being shark-free and, if so, how did you overcome them?
It is encouraging that people around us show support by not eating sharks fin in wedding banquets. Still, this year, in the Standard Chartered Marathon, I encountered some difficulties. The “Shark Outfit” is really heavy and thick, it is not easy dressing in shark to finish a 42km-race. However, I know it can inspired and touch people around me, therefore, I insist on finishing the task.
5. What made you personally decide to stop eating shark fin soup?
I think it is cruel that human killings numerous of sharks every year for shark fins.
6. What is your ideal vision for the future of sharks and our ocean?
Protecting marine lives and caring about the marine ecosystem is the only way to keep our planet sustainable. We wish to stop the cruel actions that human do on animals for their own benefits. Instead, we really hope to keep a beautiful marine ecosystem for our next generations. These are our visions and we will work hard on it!
