Shark’s fin occupies a special place in Chinese cuisine and culture and has been a symbol of wealth and prestige since the Ming Dynasty. But now we face a serious problem. Shark’s fin soup was once a luxury only affordable by the super-elite but, over the last 30 years, it has become accessible to millions of increasingly affluent consumers. Such consumerism has far-reaching consequences. In this case, the consequence is overfishing and the decimation of many shark populations, with some species listed as nearing extinction.
